Mill on Long Stream. Stoke Gabriel. c. 1865
This image shows the Tide Mill at Stoke Gabriel working at low tide.
The mills were only able to operate for two four hour periods a day, when the tide downstream of the dam had dropped below the point where the depth of water caused drag on the waterwheels: As a result mills such as this only had a limited efficiency.
This image has been constructed from available images viewing the subject from further downstream, and early O/S & tithe maps.
No more than glimpses have been available of the thatched cottage & it has been reconstructed as far as possible from these images and itís footprint on the O/S map.
